FCC On Mission

Welcome to the "Serve the World" section of our website. To serve the world is to be "On Mission" wherever you go and whatever you do. We are on mission at work, at home, in our community, and to the world. To be on mission is to Care Intentionally, Give Generously, and Love Randomly. The purpose of this section is to better inform you of ways that you can do these three things. By familiarizing you with different ministries that are supported by our church or some of its life groups, we can give you a place to start.

You can get involved in some of these ministries either through financial support or through serving at one of these ministries. You can also get involved by going on one of our scheduled mission trips (either domestic or abroad), or you can participate in one of our church-wide sponsored projects. Check back often for information or updates on what is going on and how you can get involved. For those who want to get involved, we want to try to make that process easy for you by giving you information and a person to contact.

What's Going On Now

Please continue to be in prayer for our upcoming mission trips for 2010. If you are interested in going on the Amazon River Trip in Brazil in 2012 (see International page for more details) or would like more information about the trip, please contact Tom Schory.

Shiloh Christian Children's Ranch Mission Trip: June 13th - 17th

First Christian Church will be sending a team of 22 people to the Shiloh Christian Children's Ranch in Kahoka, Missouri from Sunday, June 13 - Thursday, June 17, 2010. The team will be working on three different projects while they are there: plumbing a chicken coop, winterizing a goat shed, and removing and installing a row of mailboxes. While there, the team will be completely integrated into the mission going on at the ranch. They will be staying in the homes with the families, eating their meals with them, and participating in devotionals together. The team will also be working alongside the children on the various projects. What an awesome opportunity it will be for them to not only see up close the work being done at Shiloh, but also to participate in it firsthand!

The purpose of Shiloh Christian Children's Ranch is to provide Christian homes for abused/neglected and other children and to meet the spiritual, emotional, educational, social and physical needs of each child. They are a Christian organization, seeking to present Christ as Lord through their words and deeds. The staff and board of directors are Christian.

The ranch contains homes with full-time parents to provide a healthy, family environment. They are 100% privately funded, mainly through churches and individuals, receiving no state or federal money for this ministry. They provide ministry to children placed at Shiloh without any fee charged to the children's families. Being in a rural location, they provide a variety of opportunities for work and play, which they believe both activities to be therapeutic to the children. For more information about this ministry, you can visit their website at www.shilohranch.org.

Sonlight Ministries, Port-de-Paix, Haiti Trip Update

Seven members of First Christian Church went to Sonlight Ministries in Port-de-Paix, Haiti on a short-term mission trip from April 23 - May 1, 2010. The members of the team were Roye and Pat Wilson, Larry and Elanor Brawner, Chris Kiger, and Tom and Leigh Anne Schory. This was a wonderful experience to see God at work with the Alexander family (missionaries at work there) and the Haitian people.

While there, Roye and Larry worked on some construction on the new SonCenter building that Sonlight Ministries is building across the street from their academy, which educates students from pre-school through 12th grade. Once completed, the SonCenter will provide sanctuary space for 800 people for the growing congregation of Sonlight Church with an additional 300 seats in the balcony. In addition, it will provide extra classrooms and office space, a medical and dental clinic for visiting professionals, and the first-ever indoor baptistry in Port-de-Paix and possibly in all of Haiti.

At the Sonlight Academy, Pat, Elanor, Tom, and Chris all helped with one-on-one practice with conversational English for the students, and Leigh Anne did reading evaluations with the Kindergarteners. In addition, Pat and Elanor helped teach language classes, Chris taught some Bible classes, and Tom taught some Health classes. Elanor also helped organize the 4th grade classroom library. Leigh Anne helped out in the office getting things ready for graduation, including stamping seals on diplomas and putting them in their covers, designing the graduation programs, stuffing invitations, typing out scripts, etc. The team also participated in a career panel for the high school students where they talked about their different professions and the educational requirements of each. Overall, the trip was a huge success. For further details about Sonlight Ministries, click on the International tab at the top of this page.

First Christian Garden Ministry

The First Christian Garden Ministry raises produce for local families in need. In 2009, over 1,500 pounds of produce from this garden, located next to Freeman Lake, were donated to local families. Our goal is to double that figure in 2010, but we need your help. We are currently looking for volunteers to help in this ministry, so if you have a passion for gardening and would like to help, please email Doug Mitchell at dmitchell@firstchristianonline.com. For more information, you can contact Doug Mitchell or call Hank or Bunni Hinton at (270) 307-2246.
